Why it matters
Research consistently finds that asset allocation explains the vast majority of a portfolio's performance — more than which specific funds you pick or when you buy. A young investor might hold 90% stocks for growth; someone near retirement might hold 50% bonds for stability. Getting the mix right matters more than every other investing decision combined.
