Emergency Fund
Cash set aside for true emergencies — job loss, medical bills, car repairs — so a bad month does not become high-interest debt. It is insurance, not an investment.

Why it matters
The emergency fund exists for one reason: to keep you from reaching for a credit card at 24% APR when life happens. Start with a $1,000 starter buffer, then build a full fund covering several months of essential expenses in a high-yield savings account. It will earn less than investments would — that is the price of it being there the day you need it.
